NASA Aborts Tuesday Moon Launch Due to Unfavorable Weather Conditions NASA’s moon-bound Orion spacecraft will not be launching on Tuesday, January 18 as previously scheduled due to unfavorable weather conditions at the Space Launch Complex 37 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. NASA cited clouds, strong winds, and lightning as the reasons for their decision to push the launch back to Wednesday morning after conducting last minute checks and evaluations. The next launch window opens at 7:05 am EST on Wednesday, January 19 and closes at 9:44 am EST with an expected launch time of 8:26 am EST if it does not encounter any further delays. Why was the launch scrubbed? Officials at NASA scrubbed the launch of a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying NASA's InSight Mars lander just minutes before liftoff due to unfavorable weather conditions. The entire launch window was lost, and the next opportunity for a launch will be at 3:47 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The InSight mission is designed to ex...

JWST's First Glimpses of Early Galaxies Could Break Cosmology

Image
JWST's First Glimpses of Early Galaxies Could Break Cosmology Astronomers made the first observational detection of an ancient galaxy that existed just 400 million years after the big bang, thanks to observations from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. Scientists say the object, known as a Lyman-alpha blob (LAB), could help them refine models of how galaxies evolved in the early universe. The results are detailed in two new studies published online in the Astrophysical Journal Letters on June 18, 2018. What are the main goals of the mission? The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope that will be used to study the formation and evolution of galaxies in the universe. The JWST will provide the deepest images yet taken from the early universe and will explore mysteries including how dark energy has driven the expansion of our universe.  The JWST is set to launch aboard an Ariane 5 rocket on March 30, 2019. It will then take 2-...

UK-based Researchers Brace for Impact as Funding Troubles Loom A recent announcement from the United Kingdom's Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) suggests that UK researchers may soon have trouble getting funding in the wake of additional budget cuts, with the government planning to make the biggest cuts to research spending since World War II. The cuts will take place over the next four years and are expected to eliminate around £400 million (about $650 million USD) from funding previously allocated to universities and other research-centered institutions. This comes as bad news to researchers, who fear this will significantly hamper their ability to innovate and further their fields of study and research. So what’s going on? The UK is facing a national funding crisis, which has led to drastic measures being taken. It was announced this week that the UK plans to slash £250 million from its annual research budget. This will make it increasingly difficult for resea...

The Diet for Success: Making It Happen

The Diet for Success: Making It Happen We've all heard the old saying If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. While this saying isn't exactly true in every case, it does have its merits in certain situations, including dieting for success. If you want to achieve your dieting goals and make them last long-term, it's important to be proactive with your dieting and weight loss strategy from the very beginning. What is dieting? Dieting, or calorie restriction, is the act of limiting food intake so that your body uses its fat stores as energy. It is a strategy that has been shown to suppress the body's natural hunger signals and increase levels of hormones that tell your brain when you are full. Most people who diet experience an initial weight loss within the first few weeks, but it then plateaus and any future weight loss becomes harder and takes longer. To achieve success with a long-term weight loss diet, you will need to make adjustments to your daily diet plan and life...
